A service under threat
Southern Trains’ decision to withdraw the busy route linking west London to Gatwick Airport has caused a lot of anger among those who rely on the service.
Regular users of the service point to the many trains that sit idly in sidings at the Brighton end of the line, saying that these could be simply converted to the 'dual voltage' units that would make them suitable for the west London line.
The termination of the service means that passengers wanting to travel to Gatwick from west London will now have to change trains and platforms at Clapham Junction - a procedure that will that pose significant problems for people with disabilities or those carrying heavy luggage.
Having been told by the Department for Transport that “no-one will find that their journeys are impossible”, Malcolm Rifkind has asked for a full statement on why alternatives are not being considered, and on the implications of the change for people with disabilities. An answer is expected soon.
