An MP has vowed to help in ‘whatever way he can’ following a devastating hospital fire.

Sir Malcolm Rifkind, MP for Kensington and Chelsea, has spoken out following the blaze which damaged the Royal Marsden in Fulham Road, Chelsea, on January 2.

He said: “The rebuild of parts of the Royal Marsden destroyed by the recent fire is a very high priority but will take some time.

I am ready to help in any way I can and will be following closely the progress that is made in restoring this hospital, which performs invaluable services for the community but also for medical research around the world.”

Mayor of Kensington and Chelsea Cllr Andrew Dalton visited the hospital on Friday to show his support.

He said: “It was fantastic to see the progress made by the dedicated staff since it suffered a serious fire. Kensington and Chelsea is very proud to have such an institution in the borough.”

Chief Executive of The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust Cally Palmer said: “We are deeply grateful to the emergency services, the Royal Brompton and all those who have supported us at this difficult time. The fact that we were able to open our doors less than a week after the fire is a tribute to the immense hard work of the whole team.”

Four out of the seven in patient wards at the hospital remain closed due to smoke and water damage. An investigation into the fire is underway.
