Rt Hon Sir Malcolm Rifkind

MP for Kensington

Malcolm becomes a Patron of the Earl's Court Festival

01 April 2008

Two weeks of community culture

Malcolm Rifkind has become a patron of the Earl’s Court Festival, a two-week event that seeks to encourage a sense of community in the Earl’s Court area.

The festival aims to unite the diverse population of the Earl’s Court community by putting on a wide range of artistic and social events such as street shows, dramatic plays, classical music concerts and art exhibitions. Most of the events are very affordable, if not free.

This year’s festivities will focus on the theme of youth. The idea will be to encourage projects that engage with young people, especially those who are disadvantaged.

The festival also provides a fantastic opportunity for local businesses to raise their profile not just within the Earl’s Court community but throughout Kensington and Chelsea as a whole.

Last year’s centrepiece event, the Street Fair held on Kenway and Hogarth Roads, drew crowds of up to 2000 people. While children bounced on bouncy castles and had their faces painted, adults enjoyed the vast array of international foods and impressive variety of stage events. The 2008 Street Fair, the fourth in as many years, is sure to be another resounding success.

Also returning will be the twilight jazz evening which, in 2007, saw almost 400 people enjoying picnics while relaxing to the soothing sounds of the festival’s organiser, Malcolm Connell, and his Quartet..

This year’s festival will run from the 6th to the 20th July. If you would like further information about the festival or would like to find out more about sponsorship or volunteering, visit www.earlscourtfestival.org.uk or email the Director of the festival, Malcolm Connell, at malcolm@earlscourtfestival.org.uk.
